Tips for Planning the Perfect Office Holiday Party

If you have been put in charge of planning the holiday office party, then you will soon realize it may not be as easy as it seems.  In fact, if you are not a professional party planner, then you may want to ask for help and create a team to help out.  This way, if the party doesn’t go perfectly as planned, then all eyes aren’t on just you.

Companies view a holiday party as a nice way to reward their employees.  Employees often view it as something entirely different.  Depending on prior experiences, they may view it as the dreaded holiday office party.  Well, you can change that by planning carefully and considering the group of people you are entertaining.

  1. 1.    Know your budget and stick to it.  Once you find out your budget, you can figure out how much you want to spend on each item.  Prioritize your items so the most money can go to what you think is most important.  Location or food will probably be top on your list.
  2. 2.    Location.  You basically have two options here.  Either save money by having the party in the office and put most of the money towards food and beverages, or choose a venue that you will need to rent out for the evening.   If you are on a budget, then your best bet is to shop around for venues and find an affordable location that will still enable you to put most of your money towards food and beverages.
  3. 3.    Get it catered.  I would say that most employees look forward to the food and alcohol the most.  So if you have any extra money, put it towards the catering.  If you have a very low budget for the party, then you can always opt for potluck.  This is a great way to share family recipes and enjoy some new recipes.
  4. 4.    Set a theme.  It may seem like most of the employees are not willing to participate, but if you make it mandatory, then they will end up having a lot of fun with it.  An example can be an ugly holiday sweater party.  The employees may be reluctant, but it’s sure to create a fun buzz and a lot of laughs.
  5. 5.    Plan Activities.   This is another example of something the employees may not want to participate in, but activities are an icebreaker and will prevent people from sitting in corners and hiding with their little groups.
  6. 6.    Music.  Whether you have the budget for a DJ, or you play music on your own MP3 player and speaker system, make sure you have music.  Music will set the tone for the party and you can make it be whatever you want.
